Perhaps you’ve seen the word “Shufflemancy” surfacing around the divination community on Tumblr, and wondered what it was. Well good news for you— I’m here to give you a bit of insight on this method of divination!
Compared to many spiritual practices we know of today, this one is quite new— thanks to technology and digital media! Japan originally introduced CD players in 1982 (and globally in 1983) that could randomize tracks within a playlist. Then in 1991, music software on computers like the Windows Media Player included it as well. Moving into 2001, portable audio devices or MP3 players such as the iPod (or specifically the iPod shuffle, 2005) were released and paved the way for modern digital music streaming.
Now we often use online streaming services: Pandora, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. Customizable playlists and a myriad of artists, genres, and songs are more accessible than ever before, thus, allowing Shufflemancy to become the intricate and nuanced divination system it is today.
So choose whichever music player or service that best fits you, and let’s get started!

Some people would advise cleansing your device and aura before starting the Shufflemancy process. If you feel like there is some negative or residual energy, feel free to clear up some space within the device or even around your physical surroundings. If you also use other spiritual cleansing tools such as candles, incense or smudging techniques, these could be quite helpful. Otherwise, meditate on your question and set the intention.
If you are a clairvoyant or psychic who has contact with your spirit guide(s), you may want to assign them an “indicator song.”
Ex. Let’s say you’ve given them “Just Like Magic” by Ariana Grande. As you are shuffling through your music playlist, the song that plays after this song (if it comes up) is a message from them!
After receiving a message, you can continue to shuffle for another song that could provide you with more answers to the question in mind.

I personally allow querents to give me a number of skips, as I believe their intention is set when they have chosen one. Otherwise, I would intuitively choose the number of skips myself. They would usually pop into my mind as an image. This part may vary for many of you, as certain techniques don’t necessarily work for all diviners.
Numerology
Within my own readings, I’ve noticed how there have been specific messages regarding the number the querent or I had intuitively chosen:
1) Associated with the Sun. The messages for the querent may relate to independence, confidence and new beginnings. They are being reminded of the power they hold within their own hands!
2) Associated with the Moon. The messages for the querent are about their emotions, affection, sensitivity, intuition, and/or how they care for others. Another interpretation may refer to balance or a particular connection with another person.
3) This number revolves around concerns regarding communication, thinking, and creative expression. The querent may be inquiring about their creative endeavours or otherwise encouraged to pursue one.
4) Connected to stability and security, the querent may be advised to focus on their material or financial concerns. This number may furthermore be reference to the querent’s family matters or sense of worth.
5) Messages about change and a need to adapt or go with the flow is common with this number. Socializing and delving into high energy pursuits and playing with the inner child is advised here.
6) Matters relating to the family, home, and/or children are emphasized when this number comes up. Emotions of compassion, understanding, harmony, and warmth are present or needed.

Once you’ve reached the number of skips you intended to shuffle in your chosen playlist, lift your fingers from the button to stop the skipping! Then, pause the song whenever you are energetically drawn to particular lyrics. Remember to take note of the mood and significant memories or imagery that comes to mind from the song.

Pay attention to how the lyrics make you feel and what they are saying. How do they relate to the question in mind? If needed, you could perhaps write down any significant impressions of the song on paper and gather a message from there!
