Handwriting in Astrology
In Anatomical Astrology, Gemini rules the arms, hands, as well as the bones and muscles running through them. Not only does it rule these body parts, it also indicates how we think and communicate our thoughts. This is due to the fact that Mercury (Gemini and Virgo’s ruling planet) is connected to the brain and nervous system. All of these are interconnected.
To put it simply, our writing relies on our hand-muscle movements, and these movements are dependant on the signals coming from our brain and our nervous system. Therefore, an individual’s potential to have nice handwriting depends on their mental capabilities, as well as the level of learning and practice they have put into honing their writing skills and technique. Based on astrology, your Mercury and 3rd House sign or placements will show you the essence of your handwriting.
Mercury = your actual writing and technique
3rd House = your communication context and environment
The basics of the elements:
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) → spontaneous tone, bold handwriting, and with an impulsive process
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) → pragmatic tone, neat handwriting, and with a careful thought process
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) → lighthearted tone, airy handwriting, and with a mentally sharp process
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) → emotional tone, flowy handwriting, and with a intuitive thought process
I have interpreted all Mercury, 3rd House, and Gemini placements for those of you who want to have a deeper insight on how your handwriting may have manifested through astrology. Please keep in mind that different planetary aspects to Mercury and retrogrades will create a more intuitive approach to writing that the native personally understands. Others may perceive natives with Mercury retrograde as inconsistent in their handwriting.
Mercury in…
1H or Aries
Their handwriting may have a mix of bold, light, and slanted upright strokes that indicate impulsivity
The form of the letters may have sharp edges rather than soft curves that show moments of decisiveness and momentum
The handwriting may sometimes be large (when excited) and sometimes rushed and small (when impatient)
Underlines, exclamation points, or bold marks are added and used to emphasize naturally, showing confidence since this sign is governed by Fire and in Cardinal modality
2H or Taurus
May write slowly, steadily, and in a concentrated manner, as they may want their penmanship to be aesthetic since the sign is ruled by Venus
Letters may be written straight/upright, perhaps printed for convenience or based on the comfortability of their hands
The handwriting may also have indications of heavy pressure since this is an Earth sign, which represents groundedness
Since Taurus is a Fixed sign, their handwriting may seem consistent or unchangeable
3H or Gemini
May have more than one handwriting style or have some irregularities due to its influence of the Air element and its Mutable modality
There is an informal or friendly, versatile look, such as lightness and an airy quality to the handwriting that reflects how fast the native’s mind moves
There may be some embellishment loops or playful variations in the letters, showing expressiveness, tying to how this astrological house governs early childhood education
As this astrological house also governs the native’s neighbourhood, there could be influence from a local native language seen in their style of writing
4H or Cancer
These natives may find comfort and could build an emotional attachment to the act of writing, which could lead to improvement in their penmanship
Their style of handwriting may resemble historical cursive, ancestral or familial members’ penmanship, or simply offers an air of nostalgia (ex. a matrilineal influence since Cancer governs the mother or women)
There’s a possibility that their handwriting is visibly influenced by their native language’s script or characters since Cancer also governs home countries
5H or Leo
They may have lively and decorative letters that are rounded, expressive, and visually appealing
Moderate to large size that reflects self-confidence and desire for visibility or playfulness since this sign also governs creativity and children
There is a likely personal flair to their handwriting where the native experiments with colours, markers, or artistic styles, as Leo is ruled by the Sun that represents one’s ego
Being a Fixed modality, there’s a possibility that this native spent some time during their childhood to establish their own style and it actually stuck with them
6H or Virgo
May have very clean and seemingly “perfect” and precise handwriting, no matter if it is cursive or printed
Could be more inclined to write in printed script or with pointed/upright letters for legibility and resemblance of traditional type
Since Virgo is a Mutable sign, there is an indication that their handwriting may be changeable, however there’s an indication that they develop a specific style over time since this is an Earth sign
They may have learned how to write/communicate well during their early ages of development
Mercury naturally rules this house, so being a skilled communicator or having nice writing may come naturally
7H or Libra
Their writing may be slanted and/or cursive (can be mixed with printed script), however the native often tries to create aesthetic balance
Letters may be written with light pressure, rounded, connected and/or have narrow spacing
There may be some romantic and elegant embellishments in the style
Since Libra is a Cardinal sign, their handwriting may show their impulsivity, and they may write fast due to their quick wit
8H or Scorpio
Their handwriting tends to be controlled and compact in comparison to other Water signs since it’s traditionally ruled by Mars, and the modern ruler Pluto governs intensity. Therefore, the script can tend to be small, dense, and deliberate
They may use angular shapes and a mix of cursive letters with tight spacing in their handwriting, which ties back to the mental focus of a Fixed sign
When emotional, the handwriting could reveal a more fluid and intuitive variation with more passion
9H or Sagittarius
They may have the ability to write in more than one language
Since Sagittarius is a Mutable sign, their handwriting may be changeable due to influence from foreign languages (ex. someone who grew up writing Chinese characters may even end up writing Latin letters with a particular stroke order when they learn languages that use this alphabet)
Their letters may be large and/or bubbly and may also have wide spacing since Jupiter rules expansion
Rounded or slanted writing may be common with this placement
10H or Capricorn
Their handwriting tends to look professional and legible and consistent, as they may take their time due to the influence of Earth and Saturn being the governor of time itself
Perhaps their handwriting is neat with firm lines since the Cardinal element indicates that there is decisiveness and method in their style
This native may have a preference for print or clear cursive since they could value its function over flair
As there is also the influence of Saturn’s delays, this native’s writing may become more consistent and officially tied to their reputation over time, especially in old age or through seniority at work
11H or Aquarius
Their handwriting is most likely unusual, futuristic, and may even innovatively create trends since this sign governs social networks
May use quirky letter forms that are experimental or influenced by actual technological fonts, type or coding
The shapes, lines, and spacing of the letters may appear unique or leans towards a minimalist aesthetic
As this sign is Fixed and ruled by Air, the stylistic choices seem intentional and suits the native’s eccentric personality
This sign was also traditionally ruled by Saturn, so the native will likely develop a specific style over time that becomes recognized by their peers, as this astrological house governs friendships
12H or Pisces
May have very stylistic, slanted or may even be cursive handwriting that resembles the flow of water since Pisces is governed by this element
Letters may also be rounded and/or bubbly, and perhaps large since Pisces was traditionally governed by Jupiter, which rules expansion
The handwriting can be quite illegible to others but appears to be otherworldly
Since Pisces is a Mutable sign, their handwriting may be changeable yet beautiful and elusive
3rd House Sign or Planetary placements

Gemini/Mercury
They thrive in stimulating environments such as libraries, cafés, or while commuting, often switching between multiple notebooks or devices
Their handwriting reflects a mind that leaps from one topic to another, and when distracted, it can appear fragmented or playful
They might hide their uncertainty behind humour or wit, but when they learn to focus their restless mind and let curiosity lead instead of self-doubt, their writing becomes lively, sharp, and deeply connective since the 3rd house is already Gemini and Mercury’s home
Cancer/Moon
This is a gentle writer that likely prefers writing in intimate, quiet spaces, such as bedrooms, personal study spaces, or near comforting objects where they can explore subjects that may include family, memory, emotions, or personal history

Leo/Sun
These placements may indicate a writer who explores creativity, self-expression, performance, or leadership when writing in vibrant, inspiring spaces like sunlit rooms, stages, or communal creative studios.

Capricorn/Saturn
A writer who is focused on structure, achievement, responsibility, or historical topics such as preservation and endangered languages
They may thrive in writing in spaces that require discipline or formality such as offices, study rooms, or quiet libraries
Their handwriting is generally reflecting patience and order, and stress may otherwise create rigid, tight strokes in their penmanship

Their handwriting is sometimes difficult to decipher in its delicacy, and when anxious, it may fade or blur
Celebrity Handwriting Case Studies
All analyses are done with natal charts that have an A to AA Rodden Rating for accuracy. This list and interpretations were inspired by the article, Do You Write Like Kim or Beyoncé? What Celebrity Handwriting Tells Us About Personality (2016), written by Jasmine Gransworthy. The analyses were done by graphologist, Sheila Kurtz, as she gave insight into each celebrity’s style of writing. I wanted to offer more astrologically based insights and my own opinions on what Kurtz has said about each of the following celebrities:
Beyoncé Knowles
Mercury in 6H Libra
3H Aquarius
with ruler, Uranus in 7H Scorpio
According to the referenced article, Shiela Kurtz described Beyoncé Knowles’ handwriting as “extraordinarily clear, rhythmic, meticulous, logical, and open.” This aligns with her Mercury being in the 6th house of routines, structure, as well as the sign of Libra, which is associated with Air. Adding to this, she stated how Knowles’ handwriting shows how she can be a secretive or private person, as seen by the “loops on the right side of o formations.” This is further seen through her 3rd house’s modern ruler, Uranus sitting in the sign of Scorpio. Having this Uranus in the 7th also suggests that she is cryptic about her messages regarding relationships. As there is a very Libran air to her handwriting, there’s something creative and expressive about the way she stylizes her letters. Kurtz has said that the “big, plump loops on the y formations” specifically points to this imaginative part of her personality— there’s a bounciness in her penmanship.
Despite the Air influence of Beyoncé Knowles’ writing through Libra and Aquarius/Uranus, Kurtz interestingly interprets her as someone who does not think very quickly, and is instead very careful and likely has a slow process of handwriting that is guided by trusted intuition, “signalled by the breaks between letters.” This could be due to Saturn being the traditional ruler of the 3rd house, and having it in the 6th while exalted in Libra adds to her steadiness and conviction in how she writes. Adding to this, there is an independent nature that is seen in her handwriting, despite the influences of Libra (the sign of partnership). This is due to the fact that Knowles’ Uranus conjunct Moon is trine Leo Mars, which causes her to feel and express through her ego when she is not heard. Kurtz even picks up on this, as she interprets her underscoring her name as self-reliance.
Kim Kardashian
Mercury in 11H Scorpio
3H Aquarius with Moon in Pisces
with ruler, Uranus in 12H Scorpio
Kim Kardashian’s natal chart placements and handwriting shows how she is “straightforward in her expression” due to the lack of flourishes, start up strokes, and great influence of Aquarius, Uranus, and the 11th house. Unsurprisingly, the influence of these placements causes Kim Kardashian’s handwriting to be part of a brand since they govern the internet, social media, and innovation. Having her Mercury in Scorpio brings about an intensity to her handwriting, with bold letters and variations of strokes and sizes. The loose conjunction to her modern 3rd house ruler, Uranus in the 12th house shows how there is a collective intrigue and uniqueness to the way she writes. She is not afraid of touching on the taboo or unusual subjects, and this is evident in the example letter, where she mentions “getting naked in front of dozens of people” with her friend. After all, the 12th house does govern the collective unconscious and Scorpio governs eroticism.
The traditional ruler of her 3rd house is also an exalted Saturn in the 10th, which furthers the notion that her handwriting is brand able and important to master for the sake of creating her ideal image, reputation, and career. As Kurtz has interpreted, Kim Kardashian’s “close, round i dots also suggest she’s loyal to what she believes in,” and this is seen by the influence of the Moon in Pisces being so close to her 4th house of home, roots, and family. The Water element influencing her handwriting shows how she has a writing style that is often flowing with care and yearning for more connection and creativity in her life.
Emma Watson
Mercury in 8H Taurus
3H Scorpio with Moon in Sagittarius
with ruler, Pluto retrograde in 2H Scorpio
The referenced article’s author mentioned how Emma Watson’s “script is basically personality-less,” and I could not disagree more. The cursive and irregularities in letter shape shows how Emma Watson’s emotions were built into her handwriting, as the 8th house, Scorpio, and Pluto all greatly influences how she expresses herself— she is passionate and opinionated. These placements do however, support the author’s claim that “Watson’s style shows that she tends to cover up her tendency to act on gut feelings,” as there is an element of 2nd house and Taurus stubbornness here. Mercury in the 8th house of Taurus shows careful thought and a yearning for privacy, and its opposition to a Pluto retrograde in the 2nd house shows that Emma Watson likes to keep her truest feelings close to her chest, while being loyal to her own values. Pretty much, she will not say anything she does not mean, but she will most certainly filter her intensity. These astrological placements in particular, tie into how Kurtz interpreted Emma Watson as someone who “slows down her thinking.”
Aside from being careful with her choice of words or writing processes, Watson’s use of an “open e loops suggest that she is open-minded,” just like the Moon in Sagittarius that sits in her 3rd house, as this sign governs foreign people and those who are from different walks of life. This is even evident in the example letter to Steve Carrell, where she mentions her positive feelings towards his support for Gender Equality. This Moon is however, closely conjunct her 4th house of home and family, similarly to Kim Kardashian’s, which means she may lean more closely to appreciating people who are similar to her in terms of ‘open-mindedness'. But nevertheless and interestingly enough, Kurtz had analyzed both of them as being “loyal to people and ideas [they] believe in,” due to their close, round i dots!
Now that you’ve learned about handwriting analyses, perhaps you’d also be interested in reading more about graphology— it’s an observational “science,” and many people debate how it is not accurate. However, as you may have noticed, I was able to weave a graphologist’s interpretations with astrological evidence. So feel free to read more to make your own judgements here:
